My Grandma had made plans to come to Colorado on July 14 and stay for a long weekend. She was going to go to Tennessee from Colorado to attend a family reunion, but her family reunion got canceled a week beforehand. This is not great news when you have already spent $100's on plane tickets ... so, Grandma decided to cancel her flight to Tennessee and prolong her stay in Colorado! We got to have her here for 10 days!! We had several things already planned for the first weekend of her trip because, originally, we thought we'd only have her for 1 weekend. We went ahead with our plans for the weekend and then took it easy the rest of the time. On that first Saturday, we drove up to Cripple Creek to ride the railroad! We had been talking about doing this before the summer was over, and this was a perfect excuse to make the trip and do it! The kids were beside themselves ...... especially Gabe.
The train ride in Cripple Creek is a tour of the old gold mines. A lot of the old buildings and equipment are still standing so it's pretty neat to see it and learn about the history.
This is a Ghost Town called Anaconda. A lot of the original buildings and mining structures were still standing. At the top of the hill on the left where you see all the rock is an active mine.
This is the $1,000,000 Hill. They estimate there is about a million dollars in gold in this hill, but it would take about 2 million dollars to mine it. So, I guess they built a train track over it and considered it good! :)
